Software Digital Kit and Digital Microscope CD-ROM Special Offer - S260-CDR/DIG
Buy both Digital Kit and Digital Microscope CD-ROMs from the Discovering Geology range and save £10!

Digital Kit CD-ROM:
This fascinating virtual geological kit is presented as three 'sample boxes' containing: 30 rocks (igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary); 20 minerals; and 20 fossils. Students can investigate most of these 70 samples by 'picking them up' and 'turning them over' in three dimensions as though handling real specimens.

This CD-ROM also contains:
- a simple visual quiz to aid understanding
- an audio guide to pronunciation
- interactive labelling of key features

Digital Microscope CD-ROM:
'The Digital Microscope' allows students access to an expensive petrological microscope from their computer with 27 thin sections from the 'Digital Rock Kit' and almost 4000 high-quality colour images. A help menu explains how to use a geological microscope and a full 360 degree rotation of all samples is possible under a variety of microscope-viewing conditions.

All thin sections can be taken from their virtual storage drawers to be laid out on a simulated light box; viewed at x10 with a virtual hand lens and transferred to the digital microscope. Students can view samples under both normal, (polarised) light and between crossed polars but, unlike a conventional microscope, the same sample can be viewed under both conditions concurrently.

Computer Specification:
Pentium 100Mhz processor, Windows 98 SE operating system, 16Mb memory (RAM), hard disk drive with at least 100MB free for software, 2MB graphics card with colour monitor displaying to a resolution of 800x600, high colour, 6 x CD/DVD-ROM drive, sound card with speakers or headphones.
The multimedia software will run on an Apple Macintosh with the Classic Environment installed.

Network Licences
Multi-user licences are not available for our CD-ROMs. However, multiple copies of the same CD-ROM may be bought at a discounted price. Please contact OUW Ltd for details.

ISBN: 9780749230807

Software Maps and Landscape - S260/CDR/A
S260/CDR/A In this CD-ROM, users will:
- undertake virtual field trips in three different locations: Skye (UK), St Andrews (UK) and Big Bend, Texas (USA). On each trip, audio commentary guides students and they can discover close up features of interest
- learn field trip skills including compass and compass clinometer practice
- explore block diagrams of simple geological structures and their appearance on geological maps
- test their knowledge with a visual quiz on simple fold and fault structures

Included is a printed activity workbook that extends the CD-ROM.

Software Earth Materials - S260/CDR/B
S260/CDR/B 'Earth Materials' introduces students to the crystal structure of common minerals through three-dimensional, fully interactive crystal models and video and audio clips. This CD-ROM also features:
- a visual catalogue of nine common mineral types which allows students to examine their properties through video clips, three-dimensional models and demonstrations of simple physical tests
- a virtual lightbox, allowing students to discover how rotation of thin sections of minerals in polarised light produces interference colours in the microscope

Included is a printed activity workbook that extends the CD-ROM.

Software Internal Processes - S260/CDR/C
S260/CDR/C 'Internal Processes' features a variety of activities to aid student understanding of this geological area:
- the lava flow of volcanoes is explored through simulations of a series of experiments with melted wax. These experiments are normally unavailable outside the confines of a highly equipped geological laboratory
- a virtual fieldtrip to Skiddaw in the English Lake District. This trip integrates outcrops, virtual hand specimens, minerals, phase diagrams and rock thin sections in the digital microscope, creating an innovative and truly integrated approach for students to explore metamorphism around the Skiddaw granite
