Video Wayang Golék: Performing Arts of Sunda (West Java) - ETHNO/VC02
The following programme complements the other videos in the course AA302 'From Composition to Performance: Musicians at Work'.

Wayang Golék is the rod-puppet theatre tradition of Sunda (West Java), Indonesia - a vibrant mixture of story-telling, songs and instrumental music. The video introduces the Wayang Golék tradition, focusing on puppeteer, musician and puppet-maker Atik Rasta and his family. Footage from an all-night performance is combined with interviews in which the artists describe their art and family history. The second part of the programme concentrates on the music of the accompanying gamelan ensemble, illustrating the individual instrumental parts of a composition and their combination in group performance. An accompanying booklet includes extensive background information and teaching material for use in conjunction with the video.
