An arrogant King attacks Protestantism when it was already under threat in/from Europe. Scotland had none of it.The series starts with the mutilation of Prynne, Burton and Bastwicke - seen as religious fundamentalists of their day by the established church. In Europe, Protestants and Catholics had been warring for over twenty years and in Protestant Britain there was a fear that Catholicism was on the rise. When the distrusted Charles 1 (and his Catholic Queen) introduces changes that seem to move towards Catholicism, Scotland, the most Protestant of Charles' kingdoms, revolts. The resulting skirmishes meant that the King has to go to Parliament for money - they give him none and instead trump up charges against the Earl of Stafford - the King's most loyal aid. The King caves in. Stafford is executed, and peace returns. But then news comes in of great atrocities in Ireland.
