Video Civil War - Taking Sides - XA005/02V/02
Settling old scores in Ireland re-ignites tension between King and Parliament. King Charles declares war.
Tristam examines the massacre of Protestants at Portadown on the Orange Lodges' 12th July parade. What happened then is still carried on in the banners and in the collective memories of many of the people there. The settling of old scores here in the 17th century re-ignites tension between King Charles and Parliament in England. The king demands money for an army but again parliament defies him issuing demands of their own. Charles storms Parliament, fails to apprehend his enemies and frightened, flees London for Hampton Court. In Ireland, the war spirals out of control and in England, Charles and Parliament start to recruit sizeable armies. The King declares war and the first major battle takes place at Edgehill. The Roundhead troops fail to stop the King but the King fails to take London. The King and his Cavaliers retire to Oxford. Both sides look to Scotland and Ireland for outside reinforcements as England becomes ever more divided. Eventually the two sides meet at Marston Moor but the Parliamentarians now have Oliver Cromwell on their side..
