StudyPack Tales of the Expected Video, Viewer's Guide and Teacher's Guide - XMY2K/02

Tales of the Expected is a series of six five-minute video shorts in pop-video style aimed at the 16+ market. They are fast-moving and stylish using contemporary images. They are intended to create a positive culture towards mathematics. The video titles are: Riders, Chancers, Builders, Stackers, Coders and Shakers.

The videos were produced under the direction of the Centre for Mathematics Education at the Open University. The Centre has an international reputation for courses that have had a positive influence world-wide on the teaching and learning of mathematics.

The videos are supported by a separate Viewer’s Guide and by a Teacher’s Guide. The Viewer’s Guide enables viewers to derive the greatest benefit by watching the videos one-by-one and carry out short tasks which highlight the mathematical concepts. The Guide includes web-sites and other contacts for resources for those who want to continue their interest in the topics.

The Teacher’s Guide is aimed at teachers in schools, sixth forms and FE Colleges. It contains suggestions on how to use the videos, working with groups and sample tasks which teachers can use with their students. The tasks range from those suitable for pre-GCSE level to those engaged in A level courses. The videos are an ideal way to promote mathematics as a field of further study. The programmes have been designed to reflect post 2000 curriculum changes for the 16+ and to support the study of Free Standing Units. The Teacher’s Guide includes signposts to Key Skills.

The Open University has designed Tales of the Expected to raise the awareness of the ways that mathematics is employed and implied in everyday life. They are aimed at a young market, at a time when they are making choices that will affect their lives and careers.
