English
English is a first language for approximately 300 million people worldwide and, as the international language of science, communications and politics, it’s spoken by hundreds of millions more. Understanding how the English language is used, how texts are structured and how to make sense of them is not only satisfying in itself: it can open up a wide range of careers to you.
Studying the English language will help you appreciate how it evolved through history, in different cultural and geographical contexts. You can study spoken, written and visual, and literary and non-literary texts. You can choose to focus on the aspects that interest you most. You’ll learn to read and write with confidence about a variety of texts – from Dickens to webpages, from graffiti to political speeches – and to debate and analyse sometimes controversial issues.
