Literacy & Language
This wide topic covers a range of subjects, including creativity in the English language, from everyday language use (conversation, children’s language, letter writing, internet chat) to ‘high culture’ literary language. The international dimension is also vital, exploring language use in different parts of the English-speaking world, teaching English as a second language and how English has changed over time.
This subject also looks at how language is used in the media to distort what actually happened, how people use language to present themselves, and how texts such as academic essays, written reports, or presentations are formally organised. What is ‘good’ and ‘bad’ English? Is the influence of English worldwide cause for celebration or concern? What are the origins of the language and how has it changed in response to social, cultural and technological changes?
