Materials
The scientific study of materials includes both the theoretical and practical aspects of manufacture. This area discusses how decisions on design, process and materials can impact on a highly competitive market and also looks at additional factors that need to be considered when components are assembled together to make a structure. Factors such as the assumptions made about what happens at joints and supports can critically affect the outcomes of a stress analysis. Different industrial sectors are covered, from nuclear reactors to aeroplanes, where the theories are applied in different ways according to the types of structure and the way that they are used.
