The aim of this book is not to teach you to carry out complex statistical or mathematical calculations, but to give you enough confidence in handling these concepts to see past them to the real financial issues that they are being used to explain.
Part one of the book has been divided into three sections: the first revises the basic rules of numbers and the correct use of calculators; the second covers the slightly more advanced mathematical concepts of algebra, graphs and calculus. These first two sections will be particularly useful to students looking for a quick mathematical refresher. The third section looks at statistical techniques and uses Excel 97 to take the hard work out of long calculations.
Part two of the book contains two sections: the first looks at the time value of money and its application to investment appraisal: the second takes the general theme of the cost of finance and explores how this can be derived and applied through techniques such as capital-asset pricing model, dividend-valuation, bond valuation and option pricing.
Each section has exercises with the answers given at the back of the book.
